Course Marshals are vitally important for a safe and successful race! They are stationed along the entire length of the course to keep runners safe and on course. They direct runner traffic and cheer on runners enthusiastically. Some of these shifts are a tad long and it is highly recommended you wear comfortable shoes, clothing, bring water/snacks, and even a chair depending on location assigned. You must check in at the volunteer check-in on Wednesday, October 8 from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. at the Salem Parks & Recreation Office or at Packet Pick-Up at the Salem Farmers Market on Friday, October 10 from 3 - 7 p.m.

Cyclists

Course Marshal Relief

October 11, 2025

Details

Volunteers will ride around on their own bicycle in their assigned section of the course and offer a break to the course marshals that are in place. The course marshal relief person rides to the first marshal, offers a break and if needed, the course marshal will go to the nearest aid station to get water/use restroom, etc. The course marshal relief person will take the place of the course marshal while gone. Then, when the marshal returns, the relief person will go on to the next marshal.

Course Marking High Priority

Details

Volunteers to assist marking the course. You will meet with the race director at 8 a.m. to learn to how to mark the course. After this 30 minute training, teams of 2 people will go out and mark sections of the course. Requirements: must be able to read a map and have a good sense of direction.

Course Breakdown High Priority

Details

Volunteers will assist in breaking down, cleaning, organizing and putting away banners, tables, coolers, tents, signs, radios, etc. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and work at a steady pace.

Packet Pick-Up High Priority

Details

Set up Packet Pick-Up and assist racers in checking in and picking up race shirt and race materials at the Salem Farmer's Market. Enthusiasm and friendliness required.

*Time Slot #1 (2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.): You also need to help set up check-in from 2:00 - 3:00.

*Time Slot #2 (4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) : You also need to help clean up and break down check-in from 7:00-7:30.

*Time Slot #3 (6:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.) : You MUST be on site and in position by 6:30 AM.

General Volunteer Medium Priority

Details

This position will be assigned on the day of the race to fill-in where volunteers have not shown up. Must be flexible, like excitement and be available to move to specific areas on the course. A KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE AREA IS VERY IMPORTANT. Flexibility is key!

Salem Farmer's Market (check-in), final location could be anywhere on course.

Medical Volunteers

You must be 18-100 years old to volunteer for this task.

All medical volunteers must be currently certified as an EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, PA or MD and must submit credentials prior to race day.

Other Tasks

Race Packet Stuffing High Priority

October 8, 2025

Details

Volunteers are need to stuff race packets October 8 at the Salem Parks and Recreation Office. Volunteers will add race info, flyers, coupons, donated products, promotional items, and more into the race bags that each runner will receive at Packet Pick-Up.
